Leslie Deering has been training upper level horses and students for over 30 years. She began Glendevon Stables in 1988, after returning from several years training with, and running barns for, Torrance Watkins and Karen Reuter, in Middleburg VA, and Edith Conyers and Hill n Dale Farms in Lexington, KY. Her time spent with these operations gave her a wide variety of experience with horses. Some of the highlights of these years included experiencing the behind the scenes training, preparation and competition for the ‘84 Olympics, in which Torrance and Finvarra received a team gold medal; prepping and showing the multi million dollar TB colts sold by Hill n Dale Farms at the prestigious Keeneland Select Sales; and overseeing the care of Karen Reuter’s Arbor Hill, as he competed and flew to and from Holland, for the international three day event at Breda. It was while working for Edith Conyers, former master of the Iroquois Hunt, that Leslie was first introduced to foxhunting, sporthorse breeding via A.I., and the athleticism and versatility of draft cross sporthorses.
Leslie feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with world class horsemen, learning good old fashioned horsemanship. She continues to take advantage of lessons and clinics by international level trainers to further her knowledge. Leslie gets great satisfaction in helping others, with practical and down to earth advice, whether on selecting a new horse, or better understanding the needs of a current mount. Her extensive experience in re-educating off the track Thoroughbreds and “difficult characters” has also given Leslie a real appreciation for the much greater ease of starting, whenever possible, with a good tempered youngster, correctly handled, healthy and confident, so she began breeding quality sporthorses as well.
